Acceptable Use Policy
BrightLeft exists to help people leave something meaningful behind. This policy sets out what we will not accept on the platform — to protect the people who use it, the trustees who receive it, and the team who care for it.
1. What you must not upload
You must not use BrightLeft to create, store, schedule or deliver:
- Content that is illegal under UK law or the law of the recipient's country.
- Child sexual abuse material, terrorist content, or any material that incites violence.
- Content that harasses, threatens, bullies, blackmails or intimidates any person, including the trustees you designate.
- Content that infringes copyright, trademark, trade secret or other intellectual property rights.
- Malware, viruses, or anything designed to damage the recipient's device or network.
- Fraudulent content — fake wills, forged contracts, or anything designed to deceive.
- Unsolicited commercial content, chain letters, pyramid schemes, or “get-rich-quick” material.
2. How you must not use the service
- You must not use BrightLeft to coerce, manipulate or control someone — including from beyond your own lifetime.
- You must not designate people as trustees without a genuine belief that they will welcome receiving your message.
- You must not attempt to access, interfere with, or disrupt the service, its infrastructure, or other users' accounts.
- You must not reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code from the service.
- You must not create accounts by automated means, or operate more than one account without permission.
- You must not use the service to evade export controls or sanctions.
3. Respect for trustees
Trustees receive your messages without having asked for them. We take their experience seriously. Trustees have the right to:
- Refuse delivery and ignore the link they receive.
- Request to be removed from our system under data protection law.
- Report abusive content to abuse@brightleft.com.
Repeated complaints from trustees will result in suspension of the originating account pending review.
4. Reporting abuse
If you receive a BrightLeft message you believe is abusive, threatening or illegal, please contact abuse@brightleft.com. We review every report personally and act swiftly where warranted.
Where we are satisfied content is illegal, we will preserve it, report it to the relevant authorities as required by law, and cancel any pending deliveries.
5. Consequences of violation
We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to:
- Suspend or permanently terminate any account that breaches this policy.
- Cancel pending deliveries of content that breaches this policy.
- Refuse refunds for accounts terminated for breach.
- Co-operate with law enforcement, including preserving and disclosing data as legally required.
Because your content is encrypted, we cannot proactively scan it. We rely on trustee reports, legal process, and evidence of misuse to act. This does not diminish your obligations under this policy.
